About us

Catalysed by sustainability group, Grey Lynn 2030 CLICK HERE several community members identified the demand to create a community owned and operated Farmers’ Market, a basis to provide fresh, local produce in a unique, vibrant inner-city location.

Grey Lynn Farmers' Market encourages the participation of the community.  Our point of difference is that we are not just another boutique farmers' market, we represent a new generation of urban food production.  We wish to attract more young people and families to shop at farmers' markets and enable people to see the real value of local food.  We facilitate economic development by enabling the possibility for families to exchange or sell food grown at their home or flat.

You can grow 10 varieties of nutritious and delicious bean sprouts in a spare cupboard and sell them for $3 each and make a healthy income on a Sunday morning.  Besides that, we guarantee you'll have a great time doing it!

Sundays, 9am-12.30pm

The Grey Lynn Farmers’ Market opened on 6th September 2009. Since then, the markets are running every Sunday morning (except the last Sunday of the month) from 9am to 12.30pm at Grey Lynn Community Centre, 510 Richmond Road.

We draw our community together each week to provide many of your grocery shopping items in a vibrant inner-city location.

Why?

Many people are concerned about the provenance of their food supply. The community is suffering an epidemic of health problems, many of which are directly connected to poor diet and lack of exercise. Obesity, diabetes and asthma are increasing in the community at alarming rates.

On the other side of the fence our local farmers are complaining that while the price of goods go up, their profit margins come down.  Monoculture price fluctuations often make it difficult for farmers to predict whether they will be viable from one year to the next.  Major supermarket demands on product size often means produce is left without a market and consumers constantly complain that their food lacks flavour and freshness.

At Farmers’ Markets, producers are able to maximize their profit margins by selling direct and can receive instant feedback from customers about product quality and product preferences.

The Grey Lynn Farmers’ Market aims to support 'kiwi ingenuity' and supports small- scale farms, agricultural diversity and consumer choice.   The community has access to freshly harvested fruit and vegetables and quality locally made products at affordable prices.  Help us make a difference. Help us to help the Auckland region feed Aucklanders!
